Home Removalists’ Guide on Protecting Furniture and Fragile Items

Let's get started

Moving house is exciting, but let’s be honest: the actual process of getting your property and possessions from A to B is the part most people dread. And nothing takes the shine off a new home faster than discovering your grandmother’s vase didn’t survive the trip or your dining table now has a lovely new scratch down the middle.

The good news is that damage during a move is largely preventable. With the right preparation and techniques, your furniture and fragile items can arrive at your new place in the same condition they left.

Here’s what experienced furniture removalists know about keeping your belongings safe.

  1. Start with the Right Packing Materials

It might be tempting to save a few dollars by scrounging boxes from the supermarket and wrapping everything in old newspapers, but this is one area where cutting corners can cost you. Proper packing materials make a genuine difference.

Sturdy, purpose-made moving boxes are stronger than recycled ones that have already done a few trips. They stack better, hold their shape under pressure, and are less likely to collapse or tear at the worst possible moment. For fragile items, bubble wrap, packing paper, and foam sheets provide the cushioning needed to absorb bumps and vibrations during transit.

Don’t underestimate how much packing material you’ll need either. When it comes to protecting breakables, more is more. If you can shake a box and hear things moving around inside, it’s not packed well enough.

  1. Wrap Furniture Properly

Moving furniture is about protecting surfaces from scratches, dents, and scuffs along the way. Professional movers use furniture blankets, moving pads, and stretch wrap to keep everything covered and secure.

Furniture blankets are thick, padded covers that wrap around items to protect them from impact and abrasion. They’re especially important for wooden furniture, leather lounges, and anything with a polished or delicate finish. Stretch wrap (that clingy plastic film) is great for holding blankets in place, keeping drawers and doors from swinging open, and bundling items together.

Pay extra attention to corners and edges: these are the spots most likely to get knocked or scraped during a move. A bit of extra padding here goes a long way.

  1. Disassemble What You Can

Large furniture pieces are awkward to manoeuvre through doorways, down stairs, and into trucks. The bigger and bulkier something is, the higher the chance of an accident. Wherever possible, take things apart before moving day.

Bed frames, dining tables, modular sofas, and flat-pack furniture can usually be disassembled relatively easily. Keep all the screws, bolts, and small parts together in labelled bags so you’re not hunting for them later. Taking photos before you disassemble can also help you remember how everything goes back together.

  1. Pack Fragile Items with Extra Care

Glassware, artwork, mirrors, and electronics are the items that keep people up at night before a move. They need special attention.

For glasses and dishes, wrap each piece individually in packing paper or bubble wrap. Pack them vertically in boxes (like records, not like pancakes) with plenty of padding between each item and around the edges. Heavier items go at the bottom, lighter ones on top.

Mirrors and artwork should be wrapped in bubble wrap and then placed in purpose-built picture boxes or protected with corner guards and cardboard. Mark these boxes clearly so everyone knows to handle them with care.

Electronics are sensitive to both impact and static. Original packaging is ideal if you’ve kept it. If not, wrap items in anti-static bubble wrap and pack them snugly in boxes with no room to shift around.

  1. Label Everything Clearly

It sounds simple, but clear labelling can prevent a lot of damage. Boxes marked “fragile” get handled differently. Boxes marked “this way up” are more likely to stay the right way up. And when you know what’s in each box, you’re less likely to stack heavy items on top of delicate ones.

Use a thick marker and write on multiple sides of each box. Some people colour-code by room to make unloading easier. Whatever system works for you, just make sure everyone involved in the move understands it.

Why Professional House Removalists Make a Difference

You can do everything right with packing and still run into trouble if things aren’t loaded and transported properly. How items are arranged in the truck, how they’re secured, and how carefully they’re handled at each end all matter.

This is where home relocation services really earn their keep. Experienced furniture removalists know how to load a truck so nothing shifts during transit. They also have the right equipment to move heavy or awkward items safely. And they’ve done it enough times to anticipate problems before they happen.

There’s also something to be said for not exhausting yourself on moving day. When you’re tired and rushing, accidents happen. Letting professional movers handle the heavy lifting means you can focus on the other hundred things on your moving day checklist.
