Shipping Your Belongings to Thailand

Sea freight is the standard choice for shipping to Thailand from Australia, and it works well for full household moves. Transit times typically run between four and six weeks from Brisbane, depending on vessel schedules and customs clearance on arrival.

Which ports does Thailand use?

Most international shipments into Thailand from Australia arrive at one of two ports:

  • Laem Chabang Port – Thailand’s main deep-water container port, located about two hours south of Bangkok near Pattaya. This is the primary arrival point for most household shipments
  • Bangkok Port – A secondary option for some shipments, though Laem Chabang handles the majority of container freight

Once your shipment clears port, our destination partners coordinate last-mile delivery to Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Hua Hin, and surrounding areas.

Port customs clearance typically takes three to five business days once your goods arrive – accurate documentation is the single biggest factor in keeping this moving.

Full container or shared container?

  • Full container load (FCL): The right call for larger households shipping furniture, appliances, and a full home’s contents
  • Shared container (LCL): You pay for the space your shipment takes up – better suited to smaller moves or when you’re not shipping everything

Thailand Customs and Import Duties

Thailand Customs and Import Duties

This is where Thailand stands out from most other destinations, and where it pays to understand your situation before your goods leave Australia. Thailand’s duty exemptions for imported household goods are tied directly to your visa and residency status, and the rules differ quite a bit depending on who you are and why you’re moving.

If you hold a valid one-year work permit

Expats relocating to Thailand on a one-year non-immigrant B (business) visa with a valid one-year work permit may be eligible for duty-free import of used household goods and personal effects. To qualify, your goods must be used (owned and in use for at least six months), and your shipment must arrive within six months of your first entry into Thailand on that visa. New or unused items don’t qualify — Thai customs takes this seriously.

If you’re retiring to Thailand from Australia

This is one of the more common scenarios, and it’s worth being upfront about: retirement visa (Non-Immigrant OA) holders are generally not eligible for duty-free import of household goods under Thai customs rules.

Duties and taxes will typically apply to your shipment. The rate varies by item category – everyday household furniture and effects attract lower rates, while certain goods like bicycles, sports equipment, and luxury items are always dutiable regardless of visa status.

If you’re retiring to Thailand from Australia and want a clear picture of what your shipment might cost in duties, our team can help you work through this before you commit to what to ship. Sometimes it’s more cost-effective to leave certain items behind and replace them locally.

If you’re a returning Thai citizen

Thai nationals who have been living abroad for at least twelve months are eligible for duty-free import of used household effects and personal effects. Your shipment must arrive within six months of your return, and you’ll need to provide your original passport with full travel records showing continuous overseas residence.

What's always dutiable (regardless of visa status)

A handful of categories attract duties no matter what – even if you otherwise qualify for exemption:

  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Bicycles, sports equipment, and golf sets
  • Luxury goods including crystal glassware and porcelain
  • Toys and baby items (beyond personal use quantities)
  • Duplicate appliances – Thai customs allows one of each kind

Prohibited items

Narcotics and controlled drugs, firearms and ammunition (without specific permits), pornographic material, and counterfeit goods are prohibited. Buddha images and religious artefacts may also require prior registration with Thailand’s Fine Arts Department. Our team will flag anything in your inventory that needs attention before packing.

For a full breakdown of what’s involved in the paperwork, see our customs documentation support page.

Documents You’ll Need

The exact documentation depends on your visa status, but for most moves the following will be required:

  • Detailed packing list with item descriptions (in English)
  • Original passport with all travel records and valid visa
  • Bill of lading from the shipping line
  • One-year work permit (if claiming duty exemption as an expat)
  • Copy of Smart Visa confirmation (if applicable)

Your original passport needs to be physically present in Thailand when your shipment arrives – this is a hard requirement, not a formality.

Delivering Across Thailand

Thailand’s geography means delivery logistics vary considerably depending on where you’re headed. Bangkok is straightforward – well-connected, with experienced agents who handle high-rise apartment deliveries regularly. Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and Hua Hin are all serviced, though delivery timelines can vary depending on road access and the specifics of your address.

Our destination partners are experienced in local customs broker liaison and final-mile delivery across Thailand’s main expat and residential areas. They handle the port clearance process in-country, which keeps things moving without you needing to be across every detail personally.
