Where We Move Across Queensland

Our Queensland removals cover local, regional and longer-distance moves throughout the state.

South East Queensland

Where many of our local and interstate moves begin or finish. It includes the state’s largest population centres as well as rapidly growing areas between the coast and western suburbs. If your move is within the region, you can find more local information from our:

The Darling Downs

We cover Toowoomba, Warwick, Dalby, Stanthorpe and the surrounding region. Whether you’re leaving the coast for a regional lifestyle or heading the other way, these moves involve more travel than a standard local job and need to be planned accordingly.

Central Queensland

Rockhampton, Gladstone, Emerald and the surrounding areas. For a complete household move, the distance makes good packing and realistic transport planning especially important, as your belongings will spend considerably longer on the road.

  • Rockhampton
  • Gladstone
  • Emerald

North Queensland

This takes us into Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and other northern destinations. These are much longer journeys, and weather can have a greater impact on the route and timing, particularly during the wet and cyclone seasons.

  • Townsville
  • Cairns
Interstate moves

Moving to Queensland From Interstate

Moving interstate isn’t just a longer version of moving across town. Your belongings may be on the road for several days, you might arrive before the truck does, and there are often work, school, accommodation and property handovers happening at the same time.

That makes knowing how the move will work almost as important as knowing what it will cost.

How long does an interstate move to Queensland take?

For moves arriving in Brisbane, these transit times are a useful guide:

RouteTypical transit time
Sydney to Brisbane2–5 days
Melbourne to Brisbane3–5 days
Adelaide to Brisbane5–10 days
Perth to Brisbane10–21 days

These are guide ranges rather than guaranteed delivery dates. Your timing will depend on where you’re coming from, where you’re ultimately heading in Queensland, how much you’re moving and the type of transport you choose. If your new home is further north or west, you’ll also need to allow additional time beyond Brisbane.

  • What is backloading?

If you’ve started researching interstate removalists in Queensland, you’ve probably come across the word “backloading”. It simply means sharing space on a truck that’s already travelling in the same direction.

Rather than paying for an entire truck to make the interstate journey just for you, your belongings travel alongside other customers’ loads. You pay for the space you use, which can make it a much more affordable way to move a household over a long distance.

There is one trade-off. Because the truck may have other pickups and deliveries along the route, you usually get a delivery window rather than choosing an exact arrival time.

For someone comparing interstate removalists VIC to QLD, for example, backloading can make a lot of sense if you have some flexibility. If you absolutely need everything to arrive on a particular day, a more dedicated transport option may suit you better.

  • How are interstate moves priced?

Interstate pricing works differently from a local move. Rather than simply paying by the hour, the cost is generally based on the amount of truck space your belongings take up, along with the distance and route. That space is measured in cubic metres.

It sounds technical, but the basic idea is simple: the more you take, the more space you need.

That’s also why it can be worth having a proper clear-out before moving interstate. There isn’t much point paying to transport an old bookcase, spare mattress or garage full of things you already know you won’t use in your new home.

Plan it step by step

Moving to Queensland Checklist

There’s a lot to remember when you’re moving interstate, so spreading the jobs out over a few weeks with our moving to Queensland checklist can make the lead-up much more manageable.

  1. Around six weeks before

    • Book your house removalist and lock in your preferred dates. Interstate routes need more coordination than local moves, so organising this early gives you more options.
    • Work out what’s actually coming with you. Go room by room and decide what’s worth moving, selling, donating or throwing away.
    • Start school or childcare arrangements if you’re moving with children. It’s one less major job to deal with once you arrive.
  2. Around two weeks before

    • Confirm your pickup and expected delivery window. This is particularly important with backloading, as your belongings may arrive a few days after you do.
    • Organise your utilities. Arrange disconnection at your old home and make sure the essentials are ready at the new one.
    • Redirect your mail and start updating your address with your bank, employer, insurers and other important services.
    • Start working through the fridge, freezer and pantry. It saves waste and means less to deal with on moving day.
  3. Moving week

    • Pack a bag for the first few days. Clothes, toiletries, medication, chargers and everyday essentials should travel with you rather than on the truck.
    • Keep important documents and valuables close. Passports, identification, jewellery and anything difficult to replace are better kept with you.
    • Do one last check before leaving. Garages, sheds, outdoor areas and the backs of cupboards are easy to forget when the house is almost empty.
  4. Your first week in Queensland

    • Transfer your vehicle registration. If your vehicle is currently registered interstate, Queensland Government rules currently give you 14 days to register it in Queensland. You can check the latest requirements on the Queensland Government vehicle registration page.
    • Put your licence transfer in the diary. Relevant new residents generally need to transfer their interstate driver licence after 3 months of living in Queensland. Check the current process on the Queensland Government driver licence page.
    • Finish updating your address. Medicare, banks, insurers, subscriptions and other services are much easier to sort while the move is still fresh in your mind.

How Much Does It Cost to Move in Queensland?

The cost really depends on the move. A short local relocation and a full household move from Melbourne to Queensland are completely different jobs, so they’re priced differently too.

Local Queensland moves

CrewBest forHourly rate
2 movers + truckSmaller homes and apartmentsGet a price
3 movers + truckMedium household movesGet a price
4 movers / larger setupLarger household movesGet a price

For a local move, the biggest factor is usually time. The amount of furniture, stairs, parking and how easily the truck can get to each property can all affect how long the job takes.

2–3 bedroom20–30m³Get a quote

If you’re moving to Queensland, interstate costs vary by route and volume, so an itemised quote will always be more useful than estimating from the number of bedrooms alone.

Timing your move

When’s the Best Time to Move in Queensland?

Queensland’s weather and busy moving periods can affect your plans, especially on longer regional or interstate moves. If your dates are flexible, keep these in mind:

  • Summer heat

December to February can get hot and humid. An earlier start can make moving more comfortable and get the heavier lifting done before the hottest part of the day.

  • Storm season

Heavy rain can arrive quickly during the warmer months. We keep furniture and boxes protected while they’re being moved between your home and the truck.

  • Cyclone season

From November to April, moves north of Rockhampton can be affected by severe weather, flooding or road closures. It’s worth allowing some flexibility around longer-distance moves during this period.

  • Busy moving dates

The end of the month and end of the financial year are popular times to move. If you’re planning a regional or interstate move around these dates, booking earlier will give you more choice.

FAQs

Queensland Removalists FAQs

How much do house removalists in Queensland cost?

The cost of house removalists in Queensland depends on how far you’re moving and how much you have. Local Queensland moves are usually charged by the hour, while interstate moves are generally priced around the volume of your belongings and the route.

An inventory will give you a more accurate interstate quote than bedroom count alone.

How does interstate backloading work?

Backloading means your belongings share truck space with other customers travelling along a similar route. You pay for the space you use rather than hiring the entire truck.

It can reduce interstate moving costs, although collection and delivery dates usually need to be more flexible.

How long does moving to Queensland from NSW take?

Sydney to Brisbane is generally around 2–5 days as a guide. If you’re moving to Queensland from NSW but starting or finishing outside those cities, the journey may take longer.

Your final delivery window will depend on the route and transport option.

How long does it take to move from Victoria to Queensland?

Melbourne to Brisbane is generally around 3–5 days as a guide. If you’re comparing interstate removalists VIC to QLD, check whether the quote is for backloading or dedicated transport, as this can affect both timing and price.

Are interstate moves charged by the hour?

Generally, no. Interstate moves are commonly quoted according to the cubic metres of truck space your belongings require, along with the distance and route.

This is why reducing your load before moving can also reduce the cost.

Do I need to change my car registration when moving to Queensland?

Yes. If your vehicle is currently registered interstate, Queensland Government guidance says you have 14 days to register it in Queensland. Check the current requirements before applying, as you may need supporting documentation and a safety certificate or inspection.

When do I need to transfer my driver licence?

Relevant new Queensland residents generally need to transfer their interstate licence after living in Queensland for 3 months. There are exceptions for some circumstances, so check the current Queensland Government requirements that apply to you.

Do you handle regional Queensland moves?

Yes. Our QLD removalists handle moves throughout South East Queensland, the Darling Downs, Central Queensland and North Queensland. Regional moves are planned around the distance, volume, access and expected travel time rather than being treated like a standard local move.
