Plenty of people move from Brisbane or the Gold Coast to Northern NSW without feeling like they’ve moved interstate at all. Tweed Heads is a short drive down the M1, and Byron Bay, Ballina and the Northern Rivers have long been part of the same coastal lifestyle many South East Queenslanders already enjoy.
On paper, though, you’re changing states. That means a different licensing system, different rego rules and, for half the year, a different time zone. None of it is complicated once you know about it, but it’s much easier to sort out before moving day than after.
At Wecube Removals, we’ve been moving households across the border for more than 10 years, and these are the details we see catch people out most often.
Is Tweed Heads in NSW or Queensland?
Tweed Heads is in New South Wales. Its twin town, Coolangatta, is in Queensland, and in places the border runs along an ordinary suburban street. You can live on one side and do your shopping on the other without giving it a second thought.
The difference that does matter is daylight saving. NSW moves its clocks forward in summer and Queensland doesn’t. From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, Tweed Heads is an hour ahead of Coolangatta. For the 2026 to 2027 season, NSW daylight saving runs from Sunday 4 October 2026 to Sunday 4 April 2027.
On moving day, that hour can cause confusion. Your agent’s key handover, your electricity connection and your internet installation will all be booked in NSW time. If your crew is leaving Brisbane at 8am Queensland time, it’s already 9am at the other end. We’ll confirm our arrival time with you, but it’s worth double-checking any appointments you’ve booked yourself.
Your Licence and Car Registration
This is the part most people put off, and it has real deadlines.
Your Driver Licence
Service NSW says that if you’ve moved to NSW from another state, you can only drive in NSW on your interstate licence for three months. After that, you’ll need to swap it for a NSW licence.
Your Car Registration
Service NSW treats a vehicle that is kept or garaged in NSW without NSW registration as unregistered, and severe penalties apply for driving an unregistered or uninsured vehicle. To register a Queensland car in NSW, you’ll generally need a blue slip (an unregistered vehicle inspection report) issued no more than 42 days before you apply, plus compulsory third party insurance. Check the Service NSW interstate vehicle page for the full list before you go.
CTP Works Differently
In Queensland, your CTP insurance is included with your rego. In NSW, you buy your CTP insurance (the “green slip”) separately, so budget for it as its own cost.
Plants, Soil and the Fire Ant Rules
If you’re leaving a fire ant biosecurity zone in South East Queensland, your garden needs a little thought. NSW controls the movement of fire ant carrier materials from Queensland, and that list includes potted plants (indoor ones too), soil, mulch, compost and turf.
In practice, that means you shouldn’t simply load the pot plants onto the truck and hope for the best. Check the current rules on the NSW Department of Primary Industries website before you pack. Many people find it easier to give plants away to friends or neighbours and start fresh at the new place. Hose down outdoor furniture, bikes and garden tools too, so they don’t carry soil across the border.
How Long Does the Move Take?
Most moves into Northern NSW from Brisbane or the Gold Coast are short by interstate standards. Brisbane to Tweed Heads is roughly 100 km, and Brisbane to Byron Bay is roughly 165 km, or about a two-hour drive. From the Gold Coast, moves to Northern NSW towns such as Ballina and Coffs Harbour usually arrive anywhere from the same day to two days later, depending on the distance and whether your load travels on its own or shares a truck.
Every route is a little different, so we’ve put together a page for each one:
- Brisbane to Tweed Heads
- Brisbane to Byron Bay
- Brisbane to Ballina
- Brisbane to Coffs Harbour
- Gold Coast to Port Macquarie
Heading further south? We also move households from Brisbane to Newcastle and Brisbane to the Central Coast.
How Is a Cross-Border Move Priced?
Once you cross the border, your move is priced as an interstate job. Instead of paying by the hour like a local Brisbane move, the cost is generally based on how much truck space your belongings take up, measured in cubic metres, along with the distance and route.
That’s why a proper clear-out before you move is worth the effort. The spare mattress and the bookcase you never liked take up just as much room on the truck as the things you love. Our Brisbane interstate removals team can price your move from an inventory of what you’re taking, and if you’re leaving from the Gold Coast, our Gold Coast interstate team can do the same.
A Few More Things That Change
The licence and rego deadlines get most of the attention, but a few other things are worth adding to your list:
- NSW and Queensland set their own school term dates, so check the NSW calendar before you lock in a moving date around the school holidays.
- Your bank, employer, insurer, Medicare and electoral enrolment all need your new address, just as they would for a local move.
- You’ll be connecting energy and internet in a new state, so compare plans instead of assuming your current one carries over.
- Tell your home and contents insurer your new address and moving date, and ask whether your belongings are covered while they’re in transit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to do when moving from QLD to NSW?
The main jobs are transferring your driver licence within three months, registering your car in NSW once it’s kept there, buying a NSW green slip, checking the fire ant rules before you move plants or soil, and updating your address with the usual organisations. Book your removal early, particularly if you’re moving during school holidays.
Do I need to change my licence moving from Queensland to NSW?
Yes. Service NSW allows you to drive on your interstate licence for three months after moving to NSW. After that, you need a NSW licence.
How long does it take to move from Brisbane to Byron Bay?
Brisbane to Byron Bay is roughly 165 km, or about a two-hour drive. For most households, the whole move can be completed within a day or two, depending on the size of your home and whether your belongings travel on their own truck or share space with another load.
Is Tweed Heads in NSW or Queensland?
Tweed Heads is in New South Wales. Coolangatta, right next door, is in Queensland. Because NSW has daylight saving and Queensland doesn’t, Tweed Heads is an hour ahead of Coolangatta from early October to early April.
